The first registrations were started in September 2006, and the notion behind this domain name extension is that all websites that use it need to comply with special restrictions. In other words, all .MOBI websites must be built to be opened properly by mobile devices in accordance with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” established by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in partnership with the dot MOBI Registry organization. These involve how a web page is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), etc.

The rules have raised some concerns since the generic TLD is the only one that specifies what devices must be able to open a website and the way in which this needs to happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a website should be built in such a way as to be accessed by most browser applications and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
