Launched in 2001, the Dot NAME generic domain name extension is the single TLD intended for personal sites only. These domains can be personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other designations people are famous by. At first, only third-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to acquire john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already taken 3rd-level domain names remained online.
